Inside ARC Group | University of Nottingham Ningbo China

Eight students. One hour. No slides.
In May, ARC Group welcomed students from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China to our Shanghai headquarters for an unscripted conversation about what a career in investment banking actually demands.
A Working Office, Not a Showroom
The first thing students noticed wasn’t a presentation. It was the office itself. Capital markets, M&A, and consulting teams working in the same open space, active transactions being discussed across desks, the controlled intensity of a firm mid-deal. For most students, it was the first time encountering investment banking as a lived environment rather than a career concept outlined in a brochure.
What the Job Actually Looks Like
The session focused on one practical question: what does a typical day look like in investment banking versus consulting?
In banking, the day is structured around live transactions. Market updates, financial modeling, valuation work, materials preparation, execution support. Every task is downstream of something real and currently in motion.
In consulting, the work centers on client problems. Structuring the question, building the analytical framework, pressure-testing the logic, and ultimately delivering a defensible position. The core skill being developed is sound judgment under conditions of incomplete information.
Different rhythms, same expectation: at ARC, interns contribute to real projects. Not observation. Not peripheral support tasks. Direct involvement in transactions with genuine commercial stakes.
Why ARC, a Boutique Firm
This came up directly and it deserves a direct answer.
At a large institution, an intern may spend months on a single workstream within a single transaction. At ARC, the team structure means interns develop visibility across the broader lifecycle of a deal, from origination and structuring through to execution and close. The work is transparent and so is the contribution.
ARC’s mandates are cross-border by nature, spanning multiple jurisdictions, regulatory frameworks, capital structures, and investor constituencies simultaneously. The complexity is real. So is the exposure.
ARC also hires interns with a long-term view. Internship programs are one of the primary ways the firm identifies and develops its next generation of professionals. Retention is not incidental. It is the intent.
The Questions That Mattered
The Q&A ran long because the questions were specific. Not what does ARC do, but what do you actually look for, how quickly will I be in the room, what separates the interns who advance from those who don’t.
The answers were direct. Judgment. Execution discipline. The ability to stay sharp and move decisively when the situation is still taking shape. These are not qualities that can be performed. They are what ARC selects for and what the work will test from the start.
If There Is a Will, There Is a Way
This is one of ARC’s golden rules. Not a motto displayed on a wall. A working principle that shapes how the firm approaches every mandate, every deadline, and every problem that does not come with a clean solution.

Chinese companies are expanding abroad in greater numbers, and the largest among them are finding it easiest. Big corporates arrive with the capital and supply chains to match, and establish themselves quickly. Mid-sized companies meet harder constraints: too few bankers who work both sides of a border, a service chain that does not join up, […]
